Fairmount Real Estate, Homes & Condos in Philadelphia, PA

Where Is Fairmount?

This massive northwest neighborhood exists in the 19130 zip code, encompassing Girard and College avenues to the north, Vine Street to the south, and Kelly Drive to Corinthian Avenue, spanning west to east.

Bars, Restaurants & Dining

Residents will find the heart of Fairmount’s nightlife and dining scene along Fairmount Avenue, featuring gems like OCF Coffeehouse, a sprawling cafe space with a garage door ideal for brisk spring days; Philly Flavors, a local soft-serve ice cream shop with creamy concoctions like the Philly Blast; and London Grill, a more refined American pub that nails the classic cocktails, burgers and, in the summertime, lobster.

In the center of the neighborhood is Belgian Cafe, living up to its name by always having Belgian brews on tap in addition to local crafts – and, moreover, serves a mouthwatering brunch that won’t break the bank.

La Calaca Feliz is the definitive spot for Mexican entrees and snacks, from the same owners of popular Manayunk outpost Taqueria Feliz – with a diverse menu featuring tried-and-true classics like chicken enchiladas, far-out dishes like crispy pig ear tacos and health-conscious selects like cauliflower tacos. It’s also one of the few places in the city you’ll find breakfast tacos.

Dotting quieter corners of the neighborhood are BYO mainstays like Angelino’s Restaurant and Pizzeria, and Figs, a Mediterranean delight with a tapas menu.

Attractions, Landmarks & Parks

On Fairmount Avenue, residents will find the historic, castle-esque Eastern State Penitentiary, once a fully operational urban prison that now operates as a museum and world-class haunted house, with the theatrical and immersive Terror Behind the Walls running from September through October each fall. It’s also the home to Al Capone’s cell, which now occasionally operates as a speakeasy.

To the southwest is the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, home to the city’s flagship museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, a gargantuan house of historic artifacts spanning multiple centuries, and international art of both the fine variety and more accessible pieces for general interests – with regular programming scheduled in its immaculate Great Hall and on the famous Rocky Steps, to boot.

The Schuylkill River Trail, stretching west of the Museum of Art, is a picturesque pathway for runners, cyclists and walkers that hugs the riverfront and offers breathtaking views of Boathouse Row. To its east is the horticultural marvel of Azalea Garden, a popular go-to for picnics and warm-weather weddings.

School Districts

Philadelphia School District students in the 19130 zip code attend the Martin Bache School for kindergarten through eighth grade, as well as Benjamin Franklin High School for ninth through 12th grades. Kids may also attend Franklin Learning Center, formerly William Penn High School for Girls, which features an interdisciplinary program emphasizing computer science, the arts and business administration.

Shopping

Fairmount is buffeted on all sides with markets, with a Wawa on the corner of 21st and Hamilton, and a Target moving in at 22nd and Hamilton. the 1800s-originated and still-family-owned Klein’s Supermarket on the western end of Fairmount Avenue and a newly opened Whole Foods – mammoth in size, truly – located below Spring Garden Avenue, adjacent to Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

There are also two pharmacies, plus Fairmount Pet Shoppe – stocked with a carefully curated array of safe and healthy pet foods, toys and other supplies.
